With infertility and the incidence of miscarriage on the rise and it affecting so many men and women, even myself now this poses the question why is this happening and more importantly how do we remedy this issue? It seems that no one is completely immune to this problem. This area sadly is so complex and there can be so many different causes of infertility or miscarriage. I hope to shed some light on some of the possible causes of infertility & miscarriage that you may not have heard of and offer some advice on how to go about getting some support for this.

When it comes to fertility there are so many imbalances in the body that may trigger this. The average person may have heard of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Endometriosis or Fibroids which can all impact on fertility, as these are often spoken about, but did you know that an imbalance in your thyroid or adrenal glands, or your blood sugar levels such as insulin resistance can be the underling cause of these conditions? Did you know that the ratio of estrogen to progesterone is really vital? Did you know that autoimmune conditions can lead to infertility or miscarriage? Did you know that celiac disease or any form of malabsorption/ or damage to the gut could lead to this? Did you know intolerances to gluten or dairy could cause this? Did you know any deficiencies in common vitamins or minerals could impact on this? Did you know too much of sugar, caffeine or alcohol can cut your chances of conceiving by at least half & increase the risk of miscarriage?

If you are having problems with fertility or have been suffering from miscarriages please get some initial tests done at your GP such as FSH, LH, prolactin, progesterone, thyroid hormones, glucose, ferritin, B12, folic acid & vitamin D as a starting point. If these don’t show anything go private and get a more comprehensive set of tests done and even procedures such as a laparoscopy to see if there is anything internally causing these issues. Also go to see a Nutritional Therapist or Naturopathic Doctor who specialises in fertility issues, as they will be able to refer you for private tests that look at adrenal function or autoimmunity, gut function or any other tests that may be useful to get to the root of the problem. Please remember to not give up on things as you will get to the bottom of it, it just may take a little time. Once you know the root of it then you can seek advice on the best diet and supplements to treat this issue and in some cases medication may be appropriate if diet, supplement and lifestyle changes do not have enough of an impact. Also do not underestimate the effects of stress on fertility, so making the right lifestyle changes to minimise this could also make all the difference as sometimes diet and supplements are not enough!
